Eco-Entertainment: How to Have Fun Without Destroying the Planet (or the Bank Account)
Eco-Entertainment: How to Have Fun Without Destroying the Planet (or the Bank Account)
(Saving the world should still include snacks and laughter)
Entertainment doesn't have to mean big screens, big travel, big waste, and even bigger bills.
You can have fun and be kind to the planet — without becoming a hermit in hemp trousers.
This week we asked:
Can you have a laugh, unwind, and entertain yourself without trashing the planet or your wallet?
Spoiler: Yes, you can. Here's how we do it.
๐ฌ Streaming (But Smarter)
Sure, the carbon footprint of Netflix is real — but we're not giving it up.
Instead:
-
We stream in SD instead of 4K unless it's a nature doc worth the pixels
-
We download things we rewatch
-
We run it off our solar-charged battery system
-
We switch off autoplay (eventually)
Fun remains. Guilt declines.
๐ฒ Board Games and DIY Quiz Nights
We dusted off our old board games and found that Monopoly still ruins relationships.
Top tip:
-
Choose games made from recycled or sustainably sourced materials
-
Or make your own quizzes – sustainability-themed ones are bonus points here (What year was the ozone hole discovered?)
Some old games are timeless Monopoly, Scabble, Cludeo, Catan
๐ Local Adventures
No flights, no fuel, no hassle.
-
We explore local nature reserves
-
Go cycling by the river or the canal
-
Take the Whaly (our electric boat) for a silent cruise or use the sailing boat the RS Toura.
-
Try geocaching or a “digital-free” walk (by kids loved it)
๐ต Live Music & Arts – But Local
Support your local drama group, band, or street performer.
They’re often cheaper, walking distance, and less likely to be powered by diesel generators.
Bonus: less crowd, more character.
๐ฑ Home Cinema Nights
-
Projector on a white wall
-
Blankets and popcorn
-
All powered by solar batteries
Add in a theme (80s night, eco-documentary night, films featuring questionable climate science…) and it becomes a full event.
๐ก Fun Can Be Free – Or Nearly
Low-cost, low-carbon ideas we actually enjoyed:
-
Stargazing (no subscription required)
-
Cooking competitions with “what’s left in the fridge”
-
Repair-it days: fix a thing together, laugh when it fails, great hugs when it works
-
Nature photography contests (bonus points if it involves squirrels)
๐ง Final Thought: The Planet’s Not Saying “Don’t Have Fun”
It’s just suggesting we stop flying to festivals 6,000 miles away to listen to recycled 90s bands perform on diesel-powered stages while holding a single-use glow stick.
Have fun.
Laugh.
Play games.
Just maybe… do it powered by sunshine, wrapped in a recycled blanket, with popcorn that didn’t fly in from Peru.
