Creating a Green and Healthy Packed Lunch

Creating a Green and Healthy Packed Lunch

If you open many packed lunches today, you will often find the same familiar collection: a plastic-wrapped sandwich, a packet of crisps, a chocolate bar and a sugary drink. Convenient? Yes. Healthy or environmentally friendly? Not always.

Creating a green and healthy packed lunch is actually quite simple. With a little planning, you can reduce waste, eat better, and even save money at the same time.

🌱 Start with Reusable Containers

One of the biggest environmental problems with packed lunches is single-use plastic. Crisp packets, cling film and disposable drink bottles quickly add up.

A greener option is to use:

  • Reusable lunch boxes or bento-style containers

  • Metal or glass food containers

  • Beeswax wraps instead of cling film

  • Reusable water bottles

These changes alone can reduce hundreds of pieces of plastic waste per year.

🍎 Choose Whole Foods

Ultra-processed snacks may be convenient, but they are often high in salt, sugar and additives. A healthier lunch focuses on whole foods.

Good options include:

  • Fresh fruit (apples, bananas, grapes, berries)

  • Chopped vegetables (carrot sticks, cucumber, peppers)

  • Wholegrain sandwiches or wraps

  • Boiled eggs or hummus for protein

  • Nuts or seeds (if allowed at school)

Whole foods are not only healthier but usually have far less packaging.

🥪 Make Your Own Sandwiches

Shop-bought sandwiches can be surprisingly expensive and often come in plastic packaging. Making your own allows you to control the ingredients and reduce waste.

Try combinations such as:

  • Wholegrain bread with cheese and tomato

  • Chicken salad with lettuce and cucumber

  • Hummus and roasted vegetables

  • Tuna and sweetcorn

You can also vary things with wraps, pasta salads or rice salads to avoid lunchtime boredom.

🍫 Think Twice About Snacks

Many traditional lunchbox snacks are highly processed. Instead of crisps and chocolate bars every day, try:

  • Homemade flapjacks

  • Plain popcorn

  • Yogurt in a reusable pot

  • Oat biscuits

  • A piece of fruit

These options provide more sustained energy and reduce unnecessary packaging.

💧 Drink Water

Sugary drinks and juice cartons are common in packed lunches, but they contain a lot of sugar and create waste.

A reusable water bottle filled with tap water is usually the healthiest and most environmentally friendly choice.

In the UK, our tap water is generally well regulated and safe, and choosing it over bottled drinks reduces plastic waste.

🌍 Think Seasonal and Local

Choosing seasonal foods often reduces the environmental footprint of your lunch.

For example:

  • Apples and pears in autumn

  • Berries in summer

  • Root vegetables and soups in winter

Seasonal foods are often cheaper, fresher and tastier.

🌿 Small Changes, Big Impact

A greener packed lunch does not require a complete lifestyle overhaul. Even a few small changes can make a big difference:

  • Swap disposable packaging for reusable containers

  • Choose whole foods instead of processed snacks

  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks

  • Prepare lunches at home rather than buying packaged ones

Healthier for you. Better for the planet. And often cheaper too.

Not a bad outcome for something as simple as lunch.
