Can Simple Environmental Changes Save You £100 a Year?

Going green is often associated with spending large amounts of money.

Solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, electric cars and major insulation projects can all reduce emissions and running costs. However, they are not affordable or practical for every household. Renters may not be allowed to alter their homes, some properties are unsuitable for solar panels, and many families simply do not have thousands of pounds available for major improvements.

But what about a much smaller challenge?

Could an ordinary household save at least £100 a year through simple environmental changes—without buying expensive technology or making life uncomfortable?

£100 a year is equivalent to:

  • £8.33 a month;
  • approximately £1.92 a week;
  • about 27 pence a day.

That suddenly makes the target seem much more achievable.

The aim is not to make one dramatic sacrifice. It is to identify several small areas of waste and turn them into permanent savings.

Each action in the £100 Green Challenge can be judged using three questions:

  1. What will it cost to introduce?
  2. How much might it save?
  3. What is the environmental benefit?

The figures in this article are estimates for households in Great Britain. Actual savings will depend on the number of people in the home, existing habits, energy tariffs, appliance efficiency and the type of heating system.

Between 1 July and 30 September 2026, Ofgem’s average price-cap rates for Direct Debit customers are 26.11 pence per kWh for electricity and 7.33 pence per kWh for gas. Households on fixed, specialist or regional tariffs may pay different rates.

Why Set a £100 Target?

Advice such as “use less energy” or “save water” is too vague to motivate many people.

A measurable target makes the idea more interesting. It allows a household to record its starting point, choose several changes and then check whether those changes have actually worked.

It also makes environmental action feel less abstract.

You do not need to calculate your entire carbon footprint before doing anything useful. You can begin by asking a much simpler question:

Where are we spending money on electricity, heating and water without receiving any real benefit?

The answer might be:

  • a television and games console left on standby;
  • a tumble dryer running on a warm afternoon;
  • a half-empty dishwasher;
  • a kettle filled for four cups when only one is needed;
  • a shower running for several minutes longer than necessary;
  • lights left on in empty rooms.

None of these actions will stop climate change by itself. However, when thousands or millions of households reduce the same forms of waste, the combined effect becomes much more significant.

My Own Perspective: Green Technology Does Not Make Waste Harmless

In my own home, it would be easy to concentrate entirely on the larger environmental improvements.

We have 26 solar panels, substantial battery storage, an air-source heat pump, solar water heating and improved insulation. We can even charge electric boats using electricity generated at home.

Those systems make a considerable difference, but they do not make wasted energy harmless.

Electricity used unnecessarily during the day could have been stored in the batteries for the evening. Battery power wasted overnight may have to be replaced from the grid. Heat allowed to escape still has to be generated again.

Large technology and small habits should work together.

That is why the £100 Green Challenge is relevant both to households beginning their environmental journey and to homes that have already invested in greener systems.

The £100 Green Challenge Menu

You do not need to complete every action. Choose the changes that suit your home and aim for a combined annual saving of at least £100.

1. Use the Tumble Dryer Less Often

Typical cost: £0
Possible annual saving: Around £50
Carbon benefit: Moderate

Drying clothes outside or on an indoor airer instead of automatically using the tumble dryer could save a household around £50 a year.

This does not mean abandoning the tumble dryer completely. It could mean:

  • drying outside whenever the weather is suitable;
  • naturally drying lightweight clothes;
  • using the dryer only for towels, bedding or urgent items;
  • selecting a higher spin speed before removing clothes from the washing machine;
  • cleaning the lint filter regularly;
  • avoiding unnecessarily long drying programmes.

A practical household rule might be:

Do not use the tumble dryer unless the clothes are needed within the next 24 hours.

For some households, this single action could achieve half of the entire challenge.

The carbon benefit comes from reducing electricity consumption. The precise reduction will depend on the efficiency of the dryer and the electricity supply, but avoiding unnecessary electricity use reduces the emissions associated with generating and supplying that power. The UK Government publishes annual conversion factors for estimating emissions from electricity and fuel use.

2. Keep Showers to Four Minutes

Typical cost: £0, or a few pounds for a shower timer
Possible annual saving: Around £45
Carbon benefit: High

Keeping shower times to approximately four minutes could save a household around £45 a year on energy bills.

A phone alarm, waterproof timer or favourite four-minute song can all help.

The method is simple:

  1. Get into the shower and wet your hair and skin.
  2. Turn the flow down or off while applying shampoo and soap.
  3. Rinse thoroughly.
  4. Finish before the timer sounds.

The saving comes mainly from heating less water. There may also be a reduction in the water bill for metered households.

Waterwise advises that reducing shower time by only one minute can save roughly 12 to 15 litres, depending on the shower’s flow rate.

A family shortening several showers each day could therefore save a substantial amount of both water and energy.

3. Switch Appliances Off Standby

Typical cost: £0
Possible annual saving: Around £45
Carbon benefit: Moderate

Switching suitable appliances off standby could save around £45 a year in Great Britain.

Good candidates include:

  • televisions;
  • games consoles;
  • desktop computers and monitors;
  • printers;
  • speakers and amplifiers;
  • chargers;
  • spare-room equipment;
  • kitchen appliances with unnecessary displays;
  • workshop equipment that is rarely used.

One of the easiest solutions is to connect an entertainment system to a switched extension lead. The television, console, speakers and other accessories can then be turned off using one switch.

Equipment that needs continuous power should remain connected. This includes fridges, freezers, medical equipment, security systems and anything that must record or update overnight.

4. Wash Clothes at 30°C and Reduce the Number of Loads

Typical cost: £0
Possible annual saving: Around £27
Carbon benefit: Moderate

Washing everyday clothes at 30°C and reducing washing-machine use by one load each week could save around £27 a year in Great Britain.

Practical changes include:

  • waiting until there is a proper load;
  • using the eco programme when appropriate;
  • washing ordinary clothing at 30°C;
  • treating individual stains rather than washing an entire item again;
  • wearing lightly used clothing more than once when suitable;
  • reserving hotter cycles for items that genuinely require them.

This saves more than electricity. It can also reduce water use, detergent use and wear on clothing.

Clothes that last longer do not need to be replaced as frequently, reducing the environmental impact associated with manufacturing, transporting and disposing of textiles.

5. Boil Only the Water You Need

Typical cost: £0
Possible annual saving: Around £10
Carbon benefit: Small but effortless

Avoiding unnecessary kettle filling could save approximately £10 a year.

The easiest method is to measure the required water using the mug before pouring it into the kettle.

You could also:

  • use the kettle’s cup markings;
  • fill a flask when making several drinks close together;
  • descale the kettle regularly;
  • avoid automatically reboiling water that is still hot.

Ten pounds may not sound significant, but it represents ten per cent of the challenge and requires almost no sacrifice.

It is also a useful example of a wider principle: heating anything unnecessarily wastes energy.

6. Run the Dishwasher Only When It Is Full

Typical cost: £0
Possible annual saving: Around £11
Carbon benefit: Small to moderate

Reducing dishwasher use by one cycle per week could save around £11 a year in Great Britain.

To get the best result:

  • scrape plates instead of rinsing them under a running tap;
  • load the dishwasher fully without blocking the spray arms;
  • use the eco programme;
  • avoid running a nearly empty machine for convenience;
  • clean filters so that the machine continues working efficiently.

A full dishwasher operating on an efficient programme can be more economical than repeatedly washing small quantities under a running hot tap.

7. Fit a Tap Aerator

Typical cost: Approximately £5–£15
Possible annual saving: Around £20
Carbon benefit: Moderate

A tap aerator is a small attachment fitted to the end of a tap. It mixes air into the stream so that the flow still feels effective while using less water.

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that fitting a suitable aerator to a kitchen tap could save around £20 a year in Great Britain.

Unlike a behaviour change, an aerator works automatically once it has been installed.

The saving is greatest where the tap is frequently used for hot water because the household saves both water and the energy required to heat it.

Before buying one, check:

  • the size and thread of the tap;
  • whether the aerator is compatible;
  • the home’s water pressure;
  • whether the tap already contains a flow-reducing device.

8. Turn Off Lights in Empty Rooms

Typical cost: £0
Possible annual saving: Around £8
Carbon benefit: Small

Turning lights off when they are not needed could save around £8 a year in Great Britain.

The saving may appear small because modern LED lamps use relatively little electricity. However, it is still pointless to light an empty room.

This is particularly relevant to:

  • garages;
  • lofts;
  • sheds;
  • corridors;
  • bathrooms;
  • spare bedrooms;
  • workshops;
  • outdoor lighting.

The action becomes much easier when everyone in the household adopts the same habit.

9. Replace Remaining Halogen Bulbs with LEDs

Typical cost: Depends on the number of bulbs
Possible annual saving: Up to around £45
Carbon benefit: Moderate

Replacing remaining halogen lamps with LEDs could save a household around £45 a year if many inefficient bulbs are still in use.

You do not need to replace every bulb at once.

Begin with the lights used for the greatest number of hours:

  1. Kitchen lights.
  2. Living-room lights.
  3. Office and study lights.
  4. Hallway lights.
  5. Outdoor security lighting.

Rarely used cupboard, loft and storage-room bulbs can be replaced later.

When purchasing LEDs, compare:

  • lumens rather than watts;
  • warm-white and cool-white colour temperatures;
  • dimmer compatibility;
  • fitting type;
  • expected lifespan.

The important point is to buy the correct replacement rather than simply choosing the cheapest bulb.

10. Draught-Proof Windows and Doors

Typical cost: From a few pounds for DIY materials
Possible annual saving: Up to around £85
Carbon benefit: High

Professional draught-proofing around windows and doors could save around £85 a year in Great Britain, although simple DIY improvements can cost much less.

Look for unwanted gaps around:

  • external doors;
  • window frames;
  • loft hatches;
  • letterboxes;
  • unused chimneys;
  • floorboards;
  • pipework entering walls.

Low-cost materials might include:

  • self-adhesive foam strips;
  • brush strips;
  • letterbox covers;
  • door snakes;
  • suitable sealants;
  • chimney draught excluders.

However, draught-proofing must not block essential ventilation. Air bricks, extractor systems and vents designed for boilers or fires must remain unobstructed. Homes need controlled ventilation to prevent condensation, damp and poor indoor air quality.

11. Turn the Thermostat Down Slightly

Typical cost: £0
Possible annual saving: Around £90
Carbon benefit: High

Where it can be done comfortably and safely, reducing the thermostat from 22°C to 21°C could save around £90 a year in Great Britain.

This does not mean allowing the house to become uncomfortably cold.

The goal is to find the lowest temperature that remains comfortable for the people living in the home. Elderly residents, babies and people with certain health conditions may need warmer indoor temperatures.

Other improvements can make a slightly lower thermostat setting feel more comfortable:

  • closing curtains after dark;
  • eliminating draughts;
  • using thermostatic radiator valves;
  • heating occupied rooms rather than the entire home equally;
  • wearing an additional light layer;
  • keeping internal doors closed where appropriate.

For many gas-heated households, reducing unnecessary space heating provides a much greater carbon benefit than switching off a few small electrical appliances.

Three Ways to Complete the Challenge

Route One: Spend Nothing

Choose:

  • use the tumble dryer less: £50;
  • keep showers to four minutes: £45;
  • boil only the water required: £10.

Potential annual saving: £105

Initial cost: £0

This is one of the simplest routes, although the final saving will depend on how frequently the household currently uses the tumble dryer and how long its showers are.

Route Two: Change Several Small Habits

Choose:

  • switch appliances off standby: £45;
  • use fewer, cooler washing cycles: £27;
  • run only full dishwashers: £11;
  • avoid overfilling the kettle: £10;
  • turn off unnecessary lights: £8.

Potential annual saving: £101

Initial cost: £0

This route spreads the target across several areas, so no single change feels particularly demanding.

Route Three: Make One Larger Change

Choose one of the following:

  • reduce the thermostat slightly: around £90;
  • add one smaller change such as careful kettle use: around £10.

Alternatively:

  • draught-proof windows and doors: up to around £85;
  • fit a tap aerator: around £20.

Potential annual saving: £100 or more

The exact initial cost depends on whether the draught-proofing is completed professionally or as a DIY project.

Avoid Double-Counting

The suggested savings should not always be added together mechanically.

For example:

  • a household that already line-dries everything cannot claim a new £50 saving;
  • a home containing only LED bulbs cannot save £45 by switching to LEDs;
  • shorter showers and a water-saving showerhead may reduce some of the same consumption;
  • standby savings will be lower in a household that already switches everything off;
  • draught-proofing will save less in a modern, well-sealed property;
  • a solar-powered home may save less money for every daytime kWh avoided, although the stored or exported electricity still has value.

The challenge must begin with your current behaviour.

Ask:

What are we doing now, and which realistic changes would reduce that consumption?

How to Measure the Results

Record a Baseline

Before beginning, write down:

  • recent electricity consumption;
  • recent gas consumption;
  • water use, where metered;
  • typical shower duration;
  • weekly tumble-dryer cycles;
  • weekly washing-machine cycles;
  • weekly dishwasher cycles;
  • overnight electricity demand.

Do not rely entirely on the total bill because weather, tariffs and standing charges can change.

Compare actual energy consumption in kWh wherever possible.

Use the Smart Meter as an Experiment

A smart meter or energy monitor can help identify unnecessary demand.

Try investigating:

  • the home’s overnight base load;
  • consumption before and after switching off the entertainment system;
  • the power used by the tumble dryer;
  • the difference between washing programmes;
  • how much demand falls when unused devices are disconnected.

The purpose is not to stare at the display all day. It is to identify loads that provide little or no benefit.

Review Progress After One Month

Ask:

  • Which changes have become automatic?
  • Which have been forgotten?
  • Which appear to save the most?
  • Has the household remained comfortable?
  • Can another small change be added?

A challenge that makes everyone miserable is unlikely to last.

The most successful changes are usually the ones that become normal household routines.

What Happens to the £100?

The saved money should not simply disappear into the household account unnoticed.

Consider deliberately allocating it to something useful:

  • paying part of an energy bill;
  • purchasing LED bulbs;
  • buying draught-proofing materials;
  • improving loft insulation;
  • servicing an inefficient appliance;
  • repairing something instead of replacing it;
  • starting a fund for solar panels or battery storage;
  • paying for a family day out.

Giving the saving a purpose makes the challenge more satisfying.

It also demonstrates an important point: environmental action does not always take money away from families. Sensible environmental action can leave households financially better off.

The Collective Benefit

One household saving £100 is helpful.

If 1,000 households complete the challenge, they collectively retain:

£100,000 every year.

If 10,000 households complete it, the collective saving becomes:

£1 million every year.

The exact carbon reduction depends on which actions people choose. Saving gas by reducing heating will have a different effect from saving electricity by switching off a television.

However, the underlying principle remains the same: repeated small reductions become substantial when adopted at scale.

Environmental action is often presented as a choice between making one enormous change and doing nothing.

That is a false choice.

We need major changes in energy generation, transport, housing and industry. We also need millions of smaller decisions that reduce unnecessary demand.

Conclusion: Find the Waste Before Buying More Technology

The £100 Green Challenge is not really about £100.

It is about learning to notice waste.

Once a household begins examining its tumble dryer, showers, standby demand, lighting, heating, hot water and appliance use, it often discovers that some consumption provides no real comfort or benefit.

That is the easiest consumption to remove.

No one needs to sit in a cold, dark house. No one needs to abandon every convenient appliance. The goal is simply to stop paying for energy and water that did not need to be used.

Choose three or four changes.

Record the starting point.

Measure the results.

Keep the changes that work.

Then decide how to use the money you have saved.
