Don’t Pour Drinking Water on Your Garden: Use It Twice

Before water disappears down the plughole, ask whether you’ve really finished with it.

We have become rather accustomed to using perfectly good drinking-quality water once.

We turn on the shower and let several litres run away while waiting for it to become warm. We rinse vegetables under the tap and send the water straight down the drain. Half-finished glasses of water are tipped into the sink. An aquarium is cleaned and a bucketful of nutrient-containing water disappears down a waste pipe.

Then, a few hours later, we go outside, turn on another tap and use fresh drinking water to water the garden.

There is something slightly absurd about that.

I am already a great believer in collecting rainwater. I have a 250-litre water butt, yet during prolonged hot weather even that apparently large quantity can disappear remarkably quickly. Rainwater harvesting is certainly part of the answer, but perhaps there is another reservoir of water sitting unnoticed inside our homes.

It is the water we have already used once.

And some of it can quite sensibly be used again.


Not All Used Water Is the Same

Before we start carrying buckets out of the bathroom, there is an important distinction.

Some household water is barely dirty at all.

The cold water that runs from the shower while we wait for it to warm up is still essentially mains water. So is the water left in a drinking glass. Water used simply to rinse clean fruit and vegetables has picked up relatively little contamination.

Then there is greywater: water that has genuinely been used for washing.

The RHS includes bath, shower, kitchen and washing-machine rinse water within its gardening discussion of greywater. Some UK building and planning guidance uses a narrower definition and excludes kitchen sink water because of the potential presence of fats, oils and food contamination.

And finally there is water that we should not casually reuse at all: toilet waste, highly contaminated water, water containing strong chemicals, and water that may carry pathogens.

So perhaps the best approach is not simply:

"Save all your greywater."

It is:

"Start by saving the cleanest water that you currently waste."

That is easier, safer and requires virtually no plumbing.


1. Catch the Water While the Shower Warms Up

This may be the simplest idea of all.

Put a bucket or large jug under the shower when you first turn it on. Once the water becomes warm enough to shower, move the container away.

What have you collected?

Not greywater at all, really. It is simply clean water that would otherwise have gone straight down the drain.

Use it for:

  • pots and hanging baskets;
  • greenhouse plants;
  • houseplants;
  • garden containers;
  • topping up a watering can;
  • washing muddy garden tools.

Suppose a household captured just 6 litres a day in this way.

Over a year:

6 x 365 = 2,190 litres.

That is more than two tonnes of water that did not need to be drawn from the tap a second time.

The exact saving will vary enormously between homes, of course. If your shower becomes hot almost instantly, the saving may be tiny. If the bathroom is a long pipe-run from the boiler or hot-water cylinder, it could be considerably greater.

That makes this a rather good home experiment.

Put a measuring bucket beneath the shower tomorrow morning and find out.


2. That Half-Finished Glass Belongs to a Plant

This is such a tiny change that it hardly feels worth mentioning.

But that is exactly why it is worth mentioning.

If you have a glass of water beside the bed overnight, don't tip it down the sink in the morning.

Give it to a houseplant.

If there is water left in a jug after dinner, pour it into a watering can.

If children's water bottles come home half full, use the water rather than automatically emptying them into the sink.

One glass will make no measurable difference to Britain's water resources.

But this whole Going Green series repeatedly comes back to the same point: household sustainability is usually the accumulation of hundreds of small decisions rather than one heroic gesture.

A glass becomes a litre.

A litre becomes hundreds of litres.

And once "use the water again" becomes normal behaviour, we start noticing much larger opportunities.


3. Put a Bowl in the Kitchen Sink

Consider what happens when we wash vegetables.

Potatoes, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes and other produce are frequently rinsed under running water.

Much of that water simply disappears.

Instead, place a clean washing-up bowl in the sink while washing fruit and vegetables.

Then carry the bowl outside.

Provided the water hasn't been contaminated with detergent, grease or raw meat juices, it is an obvious candidate for immediate garden use.

There is an important food-safety boundary here. Water associated with raw meat, poultry or fish should not become "garden recycling water". The Food Standards Agency advises against washing raw meat, fish and poultry in the first place because splashing can spread harmful bacteria around a kitchen.

Vegetable-rinsing water is a very different proposition.

Again, the interesting part is to measure it.

For one week, instead of tipping it away, pour it into a marked container.

You may be surprised how much you were using.


4. Aquarium Water: Waste or Liquid Plant Food?

Anyone who keeps a freshwater aquarium periodically removes some of its water.

I would certainly think twice before pouring that straight down the drain.

Fish continually add nitrogen-containing waste to aquarium water, and aquatic plants exploit those nutrients; this nutrient cycling is one of the basic principles behind aquaponics.

That makes ordinary freshwater aquarium-change water potentially useful for ornamental garden plants.

There are qualifications.

I would not automatically use aquarium water if the tank has recently been treated with medication, contains added salt, or has been dosed with chemicals that could cause problems outside the aquarium.

Saltwater aquarium water is clearly a completely different matter.

But an ordinary untreated freshwater aquarium can give you another bucket of water that does not necessarily need to become wastewater.

Instead of:

aquarium -> drain

we can have:

aquarium -> garden -> soil

That is much more interesting.


5. Bath and Shower Water Is Where Greywater Really Begins

Now we reach genuine greywater.

Bathwater can represent a substantial quantity of water, and shower water can also be collected or diverted.

Waterwise specifically highlighted bath and shower greywater diversion for watering beds and borders in its 2026 water-saving guidance.

But this is where we need to become more careful.

Bath and shower water may contain:

soap;

shampoo;

skin oils;

hair;

cosmetics;

cleaning products;

micro-organisms.

That does not automatically make it useless.

The RHS says small-scale, short-term greywater use can help plants through dry periods. But it advises caution about contamination and recommends avoiding its use on edible crops.

So I would be much happier using bathwater around an established hedge, shrubs or ornamental flower bed than pouring it over tomorrow night's lettuce.


6. Don't Build a Greywater Storage Tank Out of a Dustbin

This is one of the most important rules in the whole article.

Greywater is not rainwater.

Rainwater can be collected in a properly designed water butt and stored.

Untreated household greywater should generally be used promptly.

The RHS advises using greywater immediately and not storing it for more than 24 hours unless it is being treated through an appropriate filtration or professionally designed system. Warm water containing organic material provides conditions in which microorganisms can multiply.

So I would not fill a large garden tank with bathwater and slowly use it for the next fortnight.

Collect it.

Use it.

Move on.

That makes the simple bucket-and-watering-can approach surprisingly sensible.


7. Washing-Machine Water Can Be Reused — But Look at What Is in It

Laundry water is another potential source.

But this is where detergent choice matters.

The RHS specifically advises avoiding greywater containing substances such as bleach, disinfectants, dishwasher salt and harsh cleaning products. It also suggests alternating greywater with rainwater or mains water so that mineral salts do not gradually accumulate in the soil.

That is an important reminder.

The aim is not to create a garden that receives nothing except detergent-containing wastewater all summer.

Greywater is better regarded as a supplement.

Perhaps today the plants receive shower water.

Tomorrow rainwater.

Next week rain falls and we need neither.

That is a far more balanced system.


8. What About Washing-Up Water?

This is one of the more complicated examples.

The RHS says washing-up water can be used on ornamental plants, and it discusses kitchen water within its broader greywater guidance.

But kitchen water can also contain:

food scraps;

oil;

fat;

salt;

strong detergents;

cleaning chemicals.

So I would apply some common sense.

A relatively clean bowl of mildly soapy water is quite different from greasy water left after washing roasting trays.

I would certainly favour the cleaner sources first.

There is usually no shortage of them.


The Greywater Red List

There are situations where enthusiasm for recycling needs to give way to hygiene and common sense.

I would not use untreated household greywater:

  • on salad leaves or other crops that may be eaten raw;
  • if it contains bleach, disinfectant or aggressive cleaning chemicals;
  • if it contains significant grease, fat or oil;
  • if it has been contaminated with raw meat, fish or poultry;
  • if it comes from a toilet;
  • if it has been sitting around becoming stagnant;
  • through a sprinkler that sprays it over people or edible plant surfaces;
  • from an aquarium that has been salted or treated with medications unless the treatment is known to be plant-safe.

For ordinary garden greywater, applying it directly to soil with a watering can is preferable to spraying it around; the RHS also warns that grease and fibres can clog irrigation systems.


Build a Water-Reuse Hierarchy

Rather than thinking of all recycled water as one category, I think a household could develop a simple hierarchy.

First choice: rainwater

Use stored rainfall whenever you have it.

Second choice: unused clean water

Shower warm-up water, unfinished drinking water and other clean water that was about to be discarded.

Third choice: lightly used water

Vegetable-rinsing water and suitable freshwater aquarium-change water.

Fourth choice: greywater

Bath, shower and suitable laundry or washing-up water, primarily for ornamental planting and preferably used immediately.

Final choice: mains drinking water

Only now do we turn on the garden tap.

That reverses our normal behaviour.

At present, many households effectively put mains drinking water first.


A Five-Litre-a-Day Challenge

Here is an experiment almost anybody could try.

For seven days, place a 5-litre container somewhere convenient.

Your challenge is simple:

find five litres of water each day that would normally have gone down a drain but can safely be used elsewhere.

It might contain:

2 litres from waiting for the shower;

1 litre from vegetable washing;

1 litre from abandoned drinking glasses and bottles;

1 litre from rinsing something harmless.

Five litres does not sound impressive.

But:

5 x 365 = 1,825 litres per year.

If a million households did the same thing:

1,825,000,000 litres.

The point is not that I expect precisely that behaviour from precisely one million households.

It is that tiny quantities become enormous when repeated across communities.


The Bigger Opportunity: Design Homes to Reuse Water

Carrying buckets is the simplest starting point.

But new and renovated homes could go considerably further.

Proper greywater recycling systems can collect water from baths, showers and washbasins, treat it, and reuse it for purposes such as toilet flushing or irrigation. UK drinking-water research recognises rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse as ways of reducing demand on drinking-water supplies while maintaining public-health safeguards.

That suggests an interesting question about the house of the future.

Why do we supply drinking-quality water to a building, use it once to wash ourselves, then send it immediately into the sewer — while simultaneously using more drinking-quality water to flush toilets and irrigate gardens?

Perhaps future homes will have several water streams:

drinking water;

rainwater;

treated greywater;

wastewater.

Just as our homes are becoming more intelligent about electricity, heating and battery storage, they may eventually become more intelligent about water.


Reusing Water Is Good — Not Needing It Is Better

There is one final warning.

Greywater recycling should not become an excuse for wasting water.

Running a 200-litre bath and congratulating ourselves because the garden eventually receives the water is not better than taking a short shower.

Likewise, collecting water does not remove the value of drought-resistant planting, mulching, shade, improving soil structure and reducing unnecessary lawn watering.

During hot weather the RHS recommends measures such as mulching and collecting run-off from pots alongside rainwater and greywater reuse.

The hierarchy should therefore really begin with:

Use less.

Then:

Capture rainwater.

Then:

Use water twice where it is sensible and safe.


Conclusion: Before You Pull the Plug

Going green is sometimes presented as though every worthwhile environmental action requires solar panels, batteries, heat pumps or expensive new technology.

This one may require nothing more sophisticated than a bucket.

Tomorrow morning, when you turn on the shower, watch the clean cold water disappearing down the drain while you wait for it to warm.

Put a bucket underneath it.

When you wash vegetables, put a bowl in the sink.

When somebody leaves half a glass of water after dinner, give it to a plant.

When you change aquarium water, think before carrying it to the drain.

And when you do use bath or shower greywater, treat it as what it is: useful water, but no longer drinking water, with sensible restrictions on where, how and how quickly it is used.

We have spent years learning to recycle paper, glass, metal and plastic.

Perhaps we now need to become equally reluctant to throw away something even more fundamental.

Water.

Before it disappears down the plughole, ask one question:

Have I really finished with it?
