Going Green Should Save You Money—So Why Does It Sometimes Feel So Expensive?
Going green isn't fundamentally about buying greener things. It's about needing fewer resources to live well.
There is something slightly odd about the way environmental living is sometimes presented.
Decide that you want to become greener and, within minutes, somebody appears to be trying to sell you something.
A new electric car.
Solar panels.
A heat pump.
A home battery.
Triple glazing.
An expensive “eco” cleaning product.
A smart thermostat.
Perhaps even an almost completely rebuilt house.
Add it all together and going green can begin to sound less like a way of saving money and resources and more like a hobby for people with £50,000 available for a home-improvement project.
That creates a serious problem.
Because if environmentalism becomes associated with spending large amounts of money, many perfectly sensible people will conclude:
“I can't afford to be green.”
Yet in many cases, the exact opposite ought to be true.
Using less energy should cost less.
Buying fewer things should cost less.
Keeping things for longer should cost less.
Walking should cost less than driving.
Repairing something should often cost less than replacing it.
Heating a house efficiently should cost less than wasting heat.
Reducing food waste means buying less food simply to throw it away.
Perhaps we need to rediscover a much simpler version of going green.
We Have Accidentally Turned Environmentalism Into Shopping
There is an understandable reason this has happened.
New technology is interesting.
A new electric vehicle makes a good photograph. A repaired 12-year-old bicycle does not.
Twenty-six solar panels on a roof are visible. Remembering to switch something off is not.
A shiny heat pump looks like something has happened. Turning the thermostat down slightly or adjusting heating times is almost invisible.
Businesses also make money by selling us products. There is considerably less commercial incentive in telling somebody:
“Actually, the most environmentally sensible thing may be to keep the one you've already got.”
This creates a peculiar form of green consumerism.
We replace an ordinary product with an “eco” product and feel that we have done something environmentally responsible.
Sometimes we have.
But we should perhaps ask a more fundamental question first:
Did I actually need to buy anything at all?
That principle is remarkably close to the formal waste hierarchy. UK policy puts prevention first, followed by preparing things for reuse, then recycling, with disposal at the bottom. In other words, even recycling comes after avoiding the waste in the first place.
That is an important idea.
The greenest dustbin is not necessarily the one containing carefully separated recyclable packaging.
It might be the dustbin that takes longer to fill.
The Cheapest Green Technology Is Often “Don't Use It”
Consider electricity.
We can spend thousands of pounds producing greener electricity.
Or sometimes we can simply reduce the amount we need.
Obviously, there are limits. Nobody is suggesting sitting in a freezing house in February or abandoning the refrigerator.
This isn't about deprivation.
It is about identifying consumption that provides surprisingly little benefit.
A television playing in an empty room.
Lights illuminating rooms nobody is using.
Heating operating according to a schedule that no longer matches the household.
A tumble dryer running on a beautiful windy summer afternoon when washing could dry outside.
A freezer set colder than necessary.
Computers and peripherals running all night when nobody needs them.
Air conditioning fighting solar heat entering through an unshaded window.
None of those changes requires a new solar installation.
They require observation.
And that is perhaps where genuinely economical environmentalism begins.
Measure what you use. Question why you use it. Then remove the waste before buying the technology.
Before Buying Solar Panels, Stop Heating the Sky
I am very much in favour of renewable technology.
At home, I have invested considerably in solar panels, battery storage, a heat pump and solar water heating. Those systems allow us to do things today that would have seemed rather futuristic not very long ago.
But they should not become an environmental entry fee.
In fact, expensive technology makes even more sense after the simple improvements have been made.
Imagine installing an expensive heating system in a house that leaks heat through an inadequately insulated loft, gaps around doors and draughty floors.
You are solving the wrong problem first.
The Energy Saving Trust describes improving the building fabric and reducing heat loss as a “fabric first” approach. Insulation and draught reduction can reduce the amount of energy a home needs before we start worrying about how that energy is generated. Care is needed with larger insulation projects, particularly around ventilation and moisture, but the underlying principle is simple: keep the heat you have already paid for.
So perhaps the order should often be:
Find the waste.
Reduce the demand.
Improve the building.
Then decide what technology is actually needed.
A smaller energy requirement may mean a smaller heating system, lower running costs and less renewable generation required to supply it.
The £40,000 Green Makeover Versus the £40 Weekend
Imagine two households.
Household A
They decide to “go green”.
They begin researching:
an electric car,
solar panels,
battery storage,
a heat pump,
new windows,
smart-home equipment.
They rapidly discover that doing everything could cost tens of thousands of pounds.
They give up.
Household B
They spend a weekend looking around their existing home.
They check heating schedules.
They find a badly fitting external door.
They turn unnecessary standby equipment off.
They move furniture away from a radiator.
They close curtains as darkness falls during winter.
They clean and maintain appliances.
They start washing full loads rather than half loads.
They put a washing line back into use.
They decide that two perfectly good appliances do not need replacing.
They start planning meals around what is already in the refrigerator.
They walk into town occasionally rather than automatically taking the car.
Nothing is dramatic.
There is no enormous technological transformation.
But Household B has already started becoming greener.
And it will probably start saving money immediately.
Maintenance May Be One of the Greenest Things We Can Do
Maintenance rarely appears in environmental advertising.
Yet consider what happens when we neglect things.
A bicycle with soft tyres becomes harder to ride, so perhaps we use the car instead.
A refrigerator with poor ventilation has to work harder.
A dirty filter reduces the efficiency of equipment.
A leaking tap wastes treated water.
A badly maintained heating system may use more energy.
A blocked gutter eventually damages a building.
A loose component becomes a broken component.
What might have required five minutes with a screwdriver becomes a replacement product.
Maintenance extends useful life.
And extending useful life delays manufacturing another replacement.
Perhaps we need to stop thinking of maintenance simply as “looking after our stuff”.
It is resource conservation.
Repair Is More Radical Than Recycling
Recycling has become almost synonymous with environmental responsibility.
But there is an interesting thought experiment.
Suppose your toaster stops working.
Choice one:
Recycle it and buy another toaster.
Choice two:
Safely repair it, where repair is practical and appropriate, and use it for another five years.
The second option avoids needing the replacement at all.
That is why prevention and reuse sit above recycling in the waste hierarchy.
The same principle applies to furniture, clothes, bicycles, garden tools, computers and countless household objects.
Of course, not everything can or should be repaired. Electrical safety matters. Sometimes an old appliance genuinely is inefficient or uneconomic.
But we have perhaps become too quick to interpret:
“This is old”
as meaning:
“This must be replaced.”
Those are not the same statement.
Second-Hand Might Be More Environmental Than “Eco”
Here is another uncomfortable thought.
Which is greener?
A newly manufactured “sustainable” desk?
Or a perfectly serviceable 20-year-old wooden desk bought second-hand?
The new desk might use certified timber. It might arrive in recyclable packaging. Its manufacturer may have reduced emissions.
All of that is worthwhile.
But the second-hand desk already exists.
No new desk has to be made because you bought it.
Second-hand shops, charity shops, refurbishment businesses, online marketplaces and the mysterious collection of useful objects lurking in relatives' garages all form part of an enormous informal environmental system.
We simply don't always describe them that way.
Keeping a Car Can Sometimes Be Greener Than Buying a Green Car
Electric vehicles provide another good example of why environmental decisions are rarely as simple as advertising slogans suggest.
An EV can considerably reduce dependence on fossil fuels during its working life, particularly as electricity generation becomes cleaner.
But that doesn't automatically mean everybody should immediately scrap a serviceable car and buy a brand-new electric one tomorrow.
Manufacturing a new vehicle requires materials and energy.
So the sensible question is not:
“Is an EV greener than a petrol car?”
It is:
“Given the vehicle I already own, how much I drive, what journeys I make and when I would otherwise replace it, what is the sensible next decision?”
For one household, changing to an EV may make excellent sense.
For another, driving the existing car less might be the better first step.
And for somebody doing short local journeys, rediscovering walking or cycling could beat both.
Walking Is an Extraordinary Piece of Green Technology
Walking requires no charging point.
No lithium battery.
No monthly subscription.
No firmware update.
No solar inverter.
And, with remarkably few exceptions, no planning permission.
For short journeys it is almost absurdly effective.
It uses virtually no purchased energy, produces no exhaust emissions and provides exercise at the same time.
Yet walking is rarely presented as exciting environmental technology because nobody can sell you the walking itself.
That may tell us something about the way sustainability is marketed.
The Most Environmental Product May Be the One You Don't Upgrade
Technology companies have trained us remarkably well.
A new model appears.
Our existing model immediately begins to feel older.
Yet yesterday it worked perfectly well.
This applies to phones, computers, televisions, cameras, kitchen equipment and countless other devices.
Suppose a £1,000 device is replaced every three years.
Keeping each one for six years could roughly halve the long-term rate at which replacements are purchased.
That is a potentially substantial financial saving before we even begin thinking about manufacturing materials, packaging and transport.
Keeping technology longer may therefore be one of the few environmental measures that requires us to do absolutely nothing.
Don't upgrade.
Sometimes inactivity is surprisingly green.
Beware the “Eco Premium”
There is another trap.
Take an inexpensive ordinary product.
Make it beige or green.
Put a leaf on the packaging.
Use words such as:
natural
planet-friendly
eco
sustainable
And occasionally the price mysteriously increases.
Some environmentally improved products genuinely cost more because better materials or manufacturing standards cost more.
But consumers should still ask the same questions they would ask about anything else.
Do I need it?
Will it last?
Can it be repaired?
Is there something I already own that does the same job?
Could I buy it second-hand?
Is the environmental claim meaningful?
The objective is not to build a cupboard full of environmentally branded products.
It is to need fewer cupboards full of products.
Cheap Green Actions Are Not Second-Class Green Actions
This matters because environmental discussion can become socially divisive.
A household struggling with bills may hear:
“You need a £30,000 electric car.”
“You need £10,000 of solar panels.”
“You need a new heating system.”
“You should rebuild your house.”
Unsurprisingly, the response may be:
“Environmentalism isn't for people like me.”
That would be a disaster.
Because some of the most valuable environmental habits cost almost nothing.
Use what you own.
Waste less food.
Repair things.
Share equipment.
Borrow rarely used tools.
Buy second-hand.
Walk shorter journeys.
Maintain appliances.
Adjust heating controls.
Reduce unnecessary electricity use.
Insulate where practical.
Keep clothes longer.
Grow something.
Collect rainwater.
Cook efficiently.
None of these actions is glamorous.
Collectively, however, they represent exactly the change environmentalism is supposed to encourage:
using fewer resources while maintaining a good quality of life.
This Isn't an Argument Against Spending Money
There comes a point when investment makes sense.
Good insulation can transform a house.
Solar panels can produce electricity for decades.
Battery storage can change when households draw electricity from the grid.
Heat pumps can provide low-carbon heating.
Electric vehicles can significantly reduce fossil-fuel use for people who need a car.
I have invested in several of those technologies myself.
But they are tools.
They are not environmental virtue.
Nor should somebody who cannot afford them feel that there is nothing useful they can do.
In fact, the sensible sequence may often be:
Use less → waste less → maintain → repair → improve efficiency → then invest in technology.
That order also makes financial sense.
Try the “Do I Need to Buy Anything?” Challenge
Here is a simple challenge for this week.
Find one thing you were considering buying.
Before ordering it, ask:
1. Do I actually need it?
Could I simply continue without it?
2. Do I already own something that does the job?
It might not be quite as fashionable, convenient or new.
3. Can the existing item be repaired?
A small repair could postpone replacement for years.
4. Could I borrow or share one?
This is particularly relevant for tools used once or twice a year.
5. Could I buy it second-hand?
Let somebody else's unwanted product become your useful one.
6. If I really need to buy new, which one will last longest?
Durability may matter more than fashionable environmental packaging.
That simple series of questions could prevent hundreds or thousands of pounds of unnecessary purchases over a lifetime.
Perhaps “Going Green” Needs a New Definition
Maybe we have been measuring environmental progress using the wrong yardstick.
We ask:
“How many solar panels have you installed?”
“What EV have you bought?”
“Have you installed a heat pump?”
Perhaps we should sometimes ask:
“How much less energy does your house now need?”
“How many things did you repair?”
“How much food did you avoid wasting?”
“How long did you keep your last phone?”
“How many journeys didn't require a car?”
“How much useful life did you get from the things you already owned?”
Those are less photogenic questions.
But they may be more important.
Going Green Should Not Mean Going Broke
Environmentalism has a communications problem if ordinary people believe protecting the planet means replacing everything they own with an expensive green alternative.
That is almost the opposite of the principle we are trying to encourage.
Yes, technology matters.
Yes, eventually we will need different cars, heating systems, electricity generation and buildings.
But at household level, one of the most powerful principles remains remarkably old-fashioned:
Look after what you have.
Use it carefully.
Repair it when possible.
Waste as little as practical.
And only replace it when there is a good reason.
That approach can reduce energy use, reduce material consumption and reduce household expenditure at the same time.
Perhaps the greenest purchase this week is not the expensive product carrying an environmental label.
Perhaps it is the purchase you decide you don't need to make.
Because going green isn't fundamentally about buying greener things.
It's about needing fewer resources to live well.
