One Weekend That Could Change Your Home Forever
Going greener at home does not always require a heat pump, a roof covered in solar panels or a new electric car.
Sometimes it just requires a weekend.
Two days.
A ladder, a screwdriver, a few replacement light bulbs, some sealant, perhaps a bag of wildflower seeds — and a willingness to look at your home slightly differently.
Most homes waste surprisingly large amounts of energy and water through dozens of small inefficiencies. A draught under a door here. A dripping tap there. A heating system running when nobody needs it. Lights that consume far more electricity than necessary. A garden that could support far more wildlife with remarkably little intervention.
None of these things appears revolutionary on its own.
Put them all together, though, and you can make a surprisingly significant difference.
So here is a challenge.
Give your home one weekend.
Not to rebuild it.
Not to spend thousands of pounds.
Just to find out where energy, water and opportunities are being wasted — and start fixing them.
Saturday Morning: Start With the Fabric of the House
Before worrying about technology, look at the building itself.
Energy efficiency starts with a very simple principle:
Keep the heat you have already paid for.
During winter, a poorly insulated house can lose heat through the roof, walls, windows, doors and floors. Even relatively small gaps around doors and windows can continually allow warm air to escape.
Start by walking around your home looking specifically for draughts.
Check:
external doors;
letterboxes;
window frames;
loft hatches;
unused fireplaces;
gaps around pipes;
garage doors adjoining the house;
conservatory doors.
You do not necessarily need expensive equipment.
On a cool or windy day, you can often feel draughts with the back of your hand.
If you happen to own or can borrow a thermal imaging camera, the exercise becomes even more interesting. Suddenly the warm areas and cold spots of your house become visible.
You may discover things you never expected.
A loft hatch that is effectively an uninsulated hole in the ceiling.
A cold strip around a window.
A door allowing far more air through than you realised.
Even heavy curtains can make a difference, particularly when closed once darkness falls during winter.
The important thing is to stop thinking of insulation as something that only exists inside walls.
Your entire house is part of the insulation system.
Check the Loft
If it is safe and accessible, take a look at your loft insulation.
Do not simply glance through the hatch.
Look for places where insulation has been disturbed, compressed or moved aside.
Tradespeople installing cables, pipework or equipment sometimes leave gaps behind them. Stored boxes can flatten insulation. Loft boarding can also create areas where insulation depth has been reduced.
A small missing section may not seem important, but heat naturally finds the easiest route out.
Think of insulation rather like wearing a winter coat.
A beautifully insulated coat with one large hole in the back is considerably less effective.
Never obstruct necessary ventilation and be cautious around electrical wiring, recessed lighting and other heat-producing fittings.
But simply knowing what is happening above your ceiling is useful.

Saturday Late Morning: The Great Light Bulb Hunt
Next, walk around the house and inspect every light fitting.
You may already have replaced most older lamps with LEDs.
But have you replaced all of them?
Look particularly at lights that are easily forgotten:
loft lights;
garage lights;
outdoor security lights;
cupboard lights;
bedside lamps;
utility rooms;
workshops;
sheds;
rarely used spare bedrooms.
An old incandescent lamp may consume around 60 W while an LED producing a similar amount of useful light might use something closer to 8-10 W.

Do not replace something merely because a newer product exists.

Do you really need six ceiling lights when two would provide enough illumination?
Could a desk lamp provide better working light than illuminating an entire room?
Would motion sensors make sense in hallways, garages or outside areas?

Are lights regularly left on in empty rooms?
Technology can help.
But behaviour costs nothing.
Saturday Afternoon: Programme the Heating Properly
Modern heating controls are powerful.
Unfortunately, many people install programmable thermostats and then effectively use them as simple on/off switches.
Spend half an hour examining yours.
Ask:
When does the house really need heating?
Are bedrooms being heated unnecessarily during the day?
Is the heating starting too early?
Does it remain on after everybody has gone to bed?
Are some rooms warmer than necessary?
Are thermostatic radiator valves correctly adjusted?
Even small temperature reductions can reduce heating demand.
That does not mean living in a freezing house.
Comfort matters.
But there is often a difference between a comfortably warm house and one that is permanently overheated.
Heat Pumps Need Slightly Different Thinking
If you use a heat pump, do not necessarily apply exactly the same strategy you used with a gas boiler.
Heat pumps often work most efficiently when providing lower-temperature heat steadily rather than repeatedly heating a cold house very rapidly.
Weather compensation, flow temperatures and longer running periods can therefore matter considerably.
I have found that moving towards an all-electric house changes the way you think about energy.
You stop simply asking:
"How much electricity am I using?"
and start asking:
"When am I using it, what am I using it for, and can I use it more intelligently?"
That is a much more useful question.
Check the Hot Water Settings Too
Hot water is another easily overlooked area.
Check:
immersion heater timers;
hot-water cylinder temperatures;
unnecessarily long heating periods;
dripping hot taps;
excessive shower temperatures.
Heating water requires substantial energy.
Using less hot water often saves both water and energy simultaneously.
That makes it one of the easiest environmental double wins available in most homes.
Saturday Afternoon: Hunt Down Water Leaks
Now turn your attention to water.
Start with the obvious.
Check every tap.
Even a slow drip is worth fixing.
Then check toilets.
A toilet cistern can leak silently into the bowl without making the obvious dripping sound we associate with a faulty tap.
Look carefully for continuous movement of water.
Check outside taps and hose connections too.
I would also inspect:
dishwasher connections;
washing-machine hoses;
under-sink pipework;
water softeners;
garden irrigation systems;
toilet valves.
Leaks are not simply an environmental problem.
They are also warning signs.
A small leak today can become a damaged floor, ceiling or cupboard tomorrow.
Try the Water Meter Test
If you have a water meter, you can conduct a simple experiment.
Turn off every appliance and tap that uses water.
Make sure nobody flushes a toilet.
Record the meter reading.
Wait.
Then check it again.
If the reading has changed when absolutely no water should have been used, you may have a leak somewhere.
That turns environmental monitoring into something much more practical.
It could prevent an expensive problem later.
Saturday Evening: Audit Your Standby Electricity
Once it gets dark, take another walk around the house.
This time, look for lights you normally ignore.

If you have solar panels, include them in your weekend inspection.
But there is an important qualification.
Do not climb onto your roof simply to clean solar panels.
Roof work carries serious risks and should be left to suitably equipped professionals where access is unsafe.
From ground level, however, you can inspect the panels visually.
Look for:
obvious dirt;
bird droppings;
leaves;
moss;
shading from growing trees;
debris around accessible ground-mounted panels;
unusual differences in appearance between panels.
In Britain, rainfall often removes much ordinary dust, which means panels may require relatively little cleaning.
But local conditions matter.
Bird activity, nearby trees, agricultural dust and roof angle can all change the situation.
More importantly, check your generation figures.
Does your system appear to be producing roughly what you would expect?
A sudden unexplained fall in output may indicate something worth investigating.
Generation Monitoring Can Reveal Problems

While you are indoors, check two appliances that work 24 hours a day.
Your refrigerator and freezer.
Make sure:
door seals are intact;
doors close properly;
ventilation openings are unobstructed;
excessive ice has not accumulated;
temperatures are appropriate;
warm food is not routinely placed straight inside.
Do not set them unnecessarily cold.
A freezer does not become more useful simply because it is several degrees colder than necessary.
And because these appliances operate continually, small efficiency improvements persist every hour of every day.
Sunday Afternoon: Make One Change to Your Laundry
Laundry provides another surprisingly easy opportunity.
Try one or more of these:
wash at a lower temperature when appropriate;
wait for a full load;
use high-speed spinning to remove more water;
line-dry when weather permits;

Again, the aim is not inconvenience.
The best green changes are the ones you barely notice after a few weeks.
If a system is so inconvenient that everybody abandons it, it has achieved very little.

At the end of the weekend, sit down and make a list.
Perhaps you have:
sealed two draughts;
replaced four inefficient bulbs;
reprogrammed the heating;
repaired a dripping tap;

created a log pile;
repaired an old garden tool;

You may not be able to attribute every change precisely to one action.

It is easy to assume that environmental improvements are expensive.
Some certainly are.
