Should We Stop Trying to Keep Britain Green All Summer?
Perhaps a brown lawn in August isn't a gardening failure. Perhaps watering it is.
For generations, the picture of the perfect British garden has included one almost compulsory feature: a neat, rich, green lawn.
Green in April. Green in June. Green in August.
But perhaps that expectation belongs to a different climate.
During a hot, dry British summer, grass begins to lose its lush colour. It fades through pale green, then yellow, then eventually turns the rather alarming straw-brown that makes us think something has gone terribly wrong.
The instinctive response is obvious.
Get the hosepipe out.
Yet an established lawn turning brown during drought has not necessarily died. In many cases, the visible leaves have died back while the roots and growing points remain alive. The grass has effectively reduced its activity until better conditions return. The Royal Horticultural Society specifically advises gardeners to resist watering established lawns during drought because they normally recover when rain returns.
So perhaps we need to ask a rather uncomfortable question.
Are we using precious drinking-quality water to keep grass alive — or simply to keep it looking green?
And those are not quite the same thing.
Britain Has Traditionally Expected Green Grass
Our obsession with green lawns is understandable.
Britain's climate historically made them relatively easy to maintain. Rainfall was usually distributed well enough that gardens could remain green without enormous amounts of irrigation.
A brown lawn therefore became associated with neglect.
The beautifully striped green lawn became associated with good gardening.
We see it at stately homes, cricket grounds, golf courses and immaculate suburban gardens. When ours turns brown, there is almost an instinctive feeling that we ought to be doing something about it.
But climate conditions are changing.
The Environment Agency says climate change is increasing the likelihood of drought as Britain experiences longer, hotter summers alongside more intense winter rainfall. In summer 2026, drought has become particularly significant: more than half of England has been in drought and several water companies have introduced temporary restrictions.
That changes the calculation.
A lawn that once remained green largely because of natural rainfall may increasingly require deliberate irrigation.
At that point, maintaining the same appearance comes with an environmental cost.
Brown Does Not Necessarily Mean Dead
Grass has an extraordinarily useful survival strategy.
When moisture becomes scarce, many established lawn grasses reduce growth dramatically. The foliage can brown and die back while the root system remains capable of regeneration.
Then comes one of those distinctly British moments: several days of decent rain.
Suddenly the lawn starts changing colour again.
Within surprisingly little time, small green shoots appear among the straw. Soon afterwards, much of the garden can look remarkably normal.
The RHS says that while drought may kill the top growth of an established lawn, the underlying roots will usually remain alive and produce fresh leaves when rainfall returns.
In other words, the grass is doing something rather clever.
It is adapting to the conditions.
We may actually be fighting its natural survival mechanism because we don't like the colour.
Green-Looking Is Not Necessarily Environmentally Green
There is a wonderfully awkward contradiction here.
Imagine two neighbouring gardens.
Garden A
The lawn is vivid green.
The owner runs a sprinkler for half an hour several evenings each week.
Garden B
The lawn is brown.
The owner has stopped mowing it closely, leaves it dormant and concentrates available water on vegetables, containers, young trees and recently planted shrubs.
Which is the greener garden?
Visually, Garden A.
Environmentally, quite possibly Garden B.
And that distinction matters.
We have become very accustomed to using the colour green as shorthand for environmental responsibility.
Yet sustainability sometimes doesn't look particularly green.
A rainwater butt isn't glamorous.
Compost isn't attractive.
Longer grass can look untidy.
And a drought-dormant lawn certainly isn't going to win an award for emerald perfection.
But appearances can be misleading.
Just How Much Water Can a Lawn Consume?
This is where the numbers become rather uncomfortable.
Water UK says hoses and sprinklers can use approximately 500–1,000 litres per hour.
Suppose somebody runs a sprinkler for just 30 minutes, three times each week.
That could amount to roughly:
250–500 litres per session
or:
750–1,500 litres each week.
Continue that for eight dry summer weeks and the lawn may have consumed:
6,000–12,000 litres of mains water.
And all to prevent a mature lawn from temporarily changing colour.
For perspective, Water UK reported average household consumption in England and Wales at about 323 litres per household per day in 2025.
So maintaining one thirsty lawn through a prolonged dry spell could involve thousands upon thousands of litres.
That makes the question much more interesting.
How important is it that our grass remains green?
It Isn't Really "Just Water"
Opening a tap creates the impression of an unlimited resource.
Turn the handle and water appears.
But that water has a journey behind it.
It has had to come from reservoirs, rivers, aquifers or other sources. It must be managed, treated and distributed through an enormous infrastructure system.
During drought, that same water resource is required for homes, hospitals, agriculture, businesses and ecosystems.
The Environment Agency's role during drought is partly about balancing human demand with rivers, wetlands, fisheries and other environmental requirements.
That doesn't mean we should stop gardening.
It means there is a sensible hierarchy.
Keeping a recently planted tree alive is rather different from keeping an established lawn aesthetically green.
So Should We Never Water Grass?
No.
That would be taking the argument too far.
There are circumstances where grass genuinely needs help.
Newly laid turf
New turf has not yet developed a deep root system.
Leaving it without water during prolonged hot weather could kill it rather than simply send it dormant.
Newly seeded lawns
Young grass seedlings are similarly vulnerable.
The RHS recommends that new lawns receive additional water while establishing, preferably using collected rainwater or suitable greywater where possible.
Exceptional drought
Even established grass has limits. A severe enough drought can eventually damage roots as well as leaves.
Specialist surfaces
Sports pitches, bowling greens and other working surfaces are different from an ordinary domestic lawn.
The key word is therefore established.
For a typical established British garden lawn, browning is normally something we can tolerate rather than an emergency requiring immediate irrigation.
Perhaps We Need a Summer Watering Priority List
Instead of simply asking, "What in my garden looks dry?", perhaps we should ask:
"What actually needs the water most?"
My summer priority would look something like this:
- People and animals
- Newly planted trees and shrubs
- Food crops
- Plants in pots and containers
- Recently planted flowers
- Established borders during exceptional stress
- New turf or newly seeded areas
- Established lawn — usually leave it alone
That turns watering from a routine into a decision.
And it could save an enormous amount of water.
Change How You Mow Before Reaching for the Hose
There are also ways of helping grass survive dry weather without watering it.
One of the simplest is to stop demanding that it looks like a bowling green.
Raise the mower
Longer grass shades the soil and encourages deeper rooting.
The RHS recommends raising mowing height during hot, dry conditions.
Mow less frequently
If the grass isn't growing much, there is little reason to keep cutting it.
Stop mowing if growth stops
Sometimes the best lawn-care equipment during drought is the mower sitting untouched in the shed.
Leave short clippings
Fine clippings can act as a light mulch, reducing moisture loss from the soil.
That is quite a change from the traditional approach.
Instead of forcing the lawn to continue growing, help it cope with not growing.
Maybe We Should Change What a Lawn Contains
There is an even more interesting possibility.
Perhaps the problem isn't simply how we maintain our lawns.
Perhaps it is what we expect a lawn to be.
The flawless monoculture lawn is effectively an artificial ecosystem.
But imagine allowing some other plants into it.
Clover.
Selfheal.
Yarrow.
Daisies.
Bird's-foot trefoil.
Perhaps even areas of longer flowering grass.
Some so-called lawn "weeds" can stay greener under drought conditions than traditional turf grasses, while flowering plants can also provide food for insects. The RHS notes that clover and yarrow can help lawns retain colour during drought and that flowering lawn plants can benefit wildlife.
Suddenly our definition changes.
Instead of asking:
"How perfect is my grass?"
we begin asking:
"How resilient is my garden?"
That is a much more useful question.
But Don't Replace the Lawn With Concrete
There is an important danger in this argument.
If lawns become difficult to maintain, someone might conclude:
"Fine. I'll pave the whole thing."
That would often be environmentally worse.
Vegetated gardens contribute to cooling, rainwater absorption, wildlife habitat and reduced surface-water runoff. Hard impermeable surfaces lose many of those advantages. RHS research describes domestic gardens as important components of urban climate resilience and biodiversity.
So the choice isn't:
green lawn or paving.
There are far more interesting possibilities:
- drought-tolerant lawns;
- meadow areas;
- clover-rich lawns;
- drought-tolerant borders;
- Mediterranean-style planting;
- gravel gardens containing plants;
- shade trees;
- permeable paths;
- ground-cover plants;
- areas of longer grass.
We should keep Britain vegetated.
We simply don't necessarily need to keep every square metre emerald green throughout August.
Use Rain When You Have It
If you do have plants that need summer watering, stored rainwater makes far more sense than automatically turning to the mains supply.
Water butts are one obvious option.
Mulching helps retain moisture.
Watering deeply and less frequently can encourage roots to explore deeper soil.
And, where appropriate, some lightly used household water can have a second life in the garden rather than disappearing immediately down the drain.
The RHS currently recommends stored rainwater first, with suitable greywater as another option when rainwater is exhausted.
That leads to a useful philosophy:
Don't try to provide every plant with unlimited water. Design the garden to need less of it.
Perhaps Our Gardens Need to Start Looking Like Our Climate
This may be the bigger issue.
We cannot insist that Britain's gardens look exactly as they did during wetter summers while simultaneously acknowledging that our climate is changing.
Gardening has always been partly about working with conditions.
We don't normally grow tropical plants outdoors through a British winter and complain when they dislike frost.
So why should we expect temperate lawns to remain permanently lush through increasingly hot, dry summers?
Perhaps the changing appearance of our gardens is telling us something.
Lavender flowering in dry soil.
Long grass turning golden.
Clover remaining surprisingly green.
Leaves providing shade.
Lawns becoming straw coloured.
Those aren't necessarily signs that gardening has failed.
They may be signs that the garden is responding naturally to its environment.
I Think We Need to Learn to Like a Brown Lawn
This is probably the hardest part.
Not the science.
Not the gardening.
The psychology.
We need to stop seeing every brown lawn as evidence of laziness or neglect.
A neighbour who allows their lawn to brown through August may actually be making a deliberate environmental choice.
Perhaps we need a new gardening badge of honour:
"Yes, my lawn is brown. I'm waiting for rain."
That simple change in expectation could save enormous quantities of water without destroying our gardens.
And when the autumn rain eventually arrives, something rather satisfying happens.
The grass comes back.
No tanker.
No irrigation system.
No frantic sprinkler.
Just rain.
And perhaps watching that transformation will remind us that gardening does not always mean controlling nature.
Sometimes it means allowing nature to do what it already knows how to do.
Conclusion: Green Is a Principle, Not a Colour
Perhaps Britain's summer gardens do need to change.
Not by becoming barren.
Not by paving everything over.
And certainly not by abandoning plants.
Quite the opposite.
We need gardens that are more resilient, more varied and better adapted to water scarcity.
That may mean tolerating longer grass.
It may mean clover among the turf.
It may mean water butts, drought-resistant planting and fewer sprinklers.
And sometimes it may mean looking out of the window at a completely brown lawn and doing precisely nothing.
Because the most environmentally responsible garden isn't necessarily the one that looks greenest.
Sometimes the genuinely green choice is brown.
