Before You Turn the Heating Back On: Give Your Home an Autumn Energy MOT

The cheapest unit of winter energy is the one your house doesn't need.

September is a curious month.

One day the windows are open and the afternoon still feels like summer. A few days later, you walk downstairs first thing in the morning and notice that unmistakable chill in the house.

And then comes the temptation.

Turn the heating on.

There is nothing wrong with using heating when we need it. Going green should not mean sitting in a cold house wearing three jumpers and feeling miserable.

But before we start paying to put heat into our homes again, perhaps we should spend an hour finding out how much of that heat is likely to stay there.

That is the purpose of an Autumn Energy MOT.

Not a major renovation.

Not a £20,000 technology project.

Not a lecture about replacing everything you own.

Just a systematic walk around the house asking:

Is my home ready to use energy efficiently this winter?


Start Before the First Proper Cold Spell

The worst time to discover that a radiator does not work is on the first freezing evening of November.

The worst time to discover a draught around the back door is when an icy wind is already blowing through it.

And the worst time to understand your heating controls is when everyone in the house is cold and somebody has simply turned the thermostat up to 25 degrees.

Autumn gives us an opportunity to find these problems while there is still time to deal with them.

Choose a reasonably cool morning or evening and walk around your house deliberately.

Take a notebook or your phone.

Look at each room.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this room feel colder than the others?

  • Are there obvious draughts?

  • Does the radiator or heating system work properly?

  • Are curtains or furniture obstructing heat?

  • Are windows closing properly?

  • Is there insulation where it ought to be?

  • Is the room being heated when nobody actually uses it?

  • Does the thermostat accurately represent the temperature of the house?

Ten minutes of investigation can sometimes reveal a problem that has been wasting energy for years.


1. Test the Heating Before You Really Need It

It sounds obvious, but turn the heating system on briefly before winter arrives.

Do all the radiators warm up?

Does underfloor heating behave as expected?

Does your heat pump start normally?

Do thermostats communicate with the system?

Are there unusual noises?

If you use a conventional wet central-heating system, feel the radiators carefully once they have warmed.

A radiator that is warm at the bottom but noticeably cooler at the top may contain trapped air and need bleeding.

A radiator that stays cold while others heat normally may have a valve problem or require further investigation.

If several radiators behave strangely, there could be a wider issue with circulation or system balancing.

Do not wait until December to discover it.


2. Stop Hiding Your Radiators

We frequently make heating systems work harder without realising it.

A sofa is placed directly in front of a radiator.

Long curtains hang over it.

A decorative radiator cover surrounds it.

Clothes are permanently drying across it.

Then we wonder why the room takes so long to become comfortable.

A radiator does not simply heat the wall immediately behind it. It warms the surrounding air and creates convection currents that help distribute heat around the room.

Give it some space.

You do not necessarily need to redesign the room, but even moving furniture slightly forward can improve the circulation of warm air.

It is one of those wonderfully unexciting green improvements that costs absolutely nothing.


3. Check Every Thermostatic Radiator Valve

If your radiators have thermostatic radiator valves, make sure they actually move.

After months of inactivity, valves can sometimes stick.

Turn them gently through their range.

Think about whether every room genuinely needs the same temperature.

A living room being used all evening may need more heat than a spare bedroom.

A hallway does not necessarily need to feel like a tropical greenhouse.

A home office may need heating during the working day but much less in the evening.

This is where heating controls become useful.

The objective is not:

How cold can I tolerate my house?

It is:

Can I put the heat where I actually need it?

There is quite a difference.


4. If You Have a Heat Pump, Don't Treat It Like a Gas Boiler

Heat pumps require a slightly different way of thinking.

Traditional boilers have encouraged many of us to think about heating in short bursts:

Heating on.

Heating off.

House gets cold.

Blast it with heat again.

A heat pump will often operate most efficiently with lower water temperatures and steadier operation.

If you have weather compensation, autumn is a good time to make sure it is enabled and correctly set.

Weather compensation allows the system to alter the heating-water temperature according to conditions outside.

Mild autumn day?

The house may only need gently warm water circulating through the system.

Freezing January morning?

The system can increase the temperature appropriately.

If you have recently installed a heat pump, resist the temptation simply to copy the timetable and settings you previously used with a boiler.

Learn how your particular system is intended to operate.

Small adjustments can make a significant difference to both comfort and efficiency.

And write down any settings before changing them so that you can return to a known starting point if necessary.


5. Find the Draughts Before Winter Finds Them

One of the easiest autumn jobs is simply to search for moving air.

Check around:

  • external doors;

  • letterboxes;

  • older windows;

  • loft hatches;

  • skirting boards;

  • pipe penetrations;

  • unused fireplaces;

  • badly fitting doors between heated and unheated spaces.

You can often detect a draught with the back of your hand on a cool day.

There is an important distinction here.

Draught-proofing is not the same as eliminating ventilation.

Homes need appropriate ventilation to manage moisture, indoor air quality and condensation.

The objective is to stop uncontrolled air leakage, not to seal every ventilation opening in the building.

Never block purpose-designed ventilation systems or vents required for appliances.

But that icy stream of air coming underneath the poorly fitted back door?

That deserves attention.


6. Inspect the Loft

If you have access to your loft, autumn is an excellent time to look inside.

You are not merely checking whether insulation exists.

Look at its condition.

Has it been compressed by boxes?

Has someone moved it while installing cables?

Are there bare patches?

Has insulation been pushed away from the loft hatch?

Has stored equipment flattened large areas?

Insulation works partly because of the air trapped within it. Squashing it beneath heavy storage can reduce its effectiveness.

Be particularly careful around electrical equipment, recessed lighting, ventilation paths, flues and other installations where specific safety requirements apply.

If you are unsure, obtain professional advice rather than simply piling insulation everywhere.

But you may discover something surprisingly simple.

Sometimes the insulation is perfectly adequate except for one area that has been disturbed.


7. Don't Forget the Loft Hatch

We can spend considerable amounts insulating a loft and then leave what is effectively a poorly insulated door in the ceiling.

Check your loft hatch.

Does it fit properly?

Is it insulated?

Is there a draught around the edge?

A simple seal may help.

The same principle applies throughout the house.

Energy efficiency is frequently not about one enormous problem.

It is about dozens of little ones.


8. Walk Around the House Looking for Cold Rooms

Most houses have them.

The bedroom above the garage.

The north-facing study.

The conservatory.

The extension.

The downstairs cloakroom.

The room with three outside walls.

Do not simply accept that:

"That room has always been cold."

Ask why.

Perhaps it loses more heat because of its position.

Perhaps its radiator is undersized.

Perhaps the window seal has deteriorated.

Perhaps insulation is missing.

Perhaps the radiator is behind a large desk.

Perhaps the heating switches off before the room has caught up with the rest of the house.

Understanding where the house loses heat is more useful than simply increasing the thermostat for the entire building.


9. Try a Simple Temperature Survey

You do not need sophisticated equipment.

Take a reasonably accurate digital thermometer and record temperatures in several rooms.

Try measurements:

  • early in the morning;

  • shortly before the heating comes on;

  • after the heating has operated;

  • an hour after it switches off.

You may discover that one room cools dramatically faster than the others.

That tells you something.

Perhaps it has more exposed walls.

Perhaps the windows perform badly.

Perhaps a door is leaking air.

Perhaps insulation deserves investigation.

You have moved from guessing to measuring.

And once you start measuring things, energy efficiency becomes considerably more interesting.


10. Thermal Cameras Can Reveal a Different House

If you happen to own or can borrow a thermal-imaging camera, a cold autumn morning can be fascinating.

Suddenly the invisible becomes visible.

You may see:

  • colder areas around windows;

  • missing insulation;

  • warm pipes hidden behind walls;

  • heat escaping around doors;

  • uneven radiator temperatures;

  • areas where insulation has been disturbed.

Thermal images need interpreting carefully because surfaces and materials behave differently, but they can be extremely useful as a diagnostic tool.

You may have walked past the same piece of wall thousands of times without realising it behaves differently from the surrounding area.

Then you look at it thermally and immediately ask:

Why is that patch colder?

That is exactly the sort of question an Energy MOT should encourage.


11. Check the Thermostat Location

Where is your main thermostat?

It is surprisingly important.

Imagine the thermostat is in a warm hallway close to a radiator.

The heating reaches its target temperature quickly and switches off.

Meanwhile, your living room is still cold.

Or perhaps the thermostat is in a draughty location and continually believes the house is colder than it really is.

The heating keeps running.

Thermostats can only react to the temperature they measure.

They do not understand the rest of the house.

Autumn is a good opportunity to compare the thermostat reading with a separate thermometer and see whether it represents your living conditions reasonably well.


12. Look Again at Your Heating Schedule

Our lives change.

Heating schedules often do not.

Perhaps someone now works from home.

Perhaps children have gone to university.

Perhaps nobody gets up at 6:30 am anymore.

Perhaps the heating still comes on at 5:30 am because that was necessary eight years ago.

Look at your timer or smart-heating schedule.

Ask:

Does this still reflect the way we live?

There is little point heating an empty house according to a timetable inherited from a completely different household routine.

At the same time, avoid changes that make your particular heating system operate less efficiently.

Heat pumps in particular may benefit from steadier operation rather than repeated large temperature swings.

The correct answer depends upon the house and the heating system.


13. Think Carefully About Hot Water

Space heating tends to dominate our winter thinking, but hot water uses energy throughout the year.

Check:

  • hot-water schedules;

  • cylinder settings;

  • excessively long heating periods;

  • dripping hot taps;

  • unnecessarily long showers;

  • poorly insulated hot-water pipes.

Do not simply reduce stored hot-water temperatures without understanding the safety requirements of your system.

Domestic hot-water systems may require particular temperatures or periodic higher-temperature cycles for hygiene reasons.

Follow the instructions supplied with your cylinder, boiler or heat-pump system, and ask a competent installer if you are unsure.

The objective is efficient hot water, not unsafe hot water.


14. Close the Curtains — But Let the Radiator Work

Curtains and blinds can reduce heat loss through windows, particularly during colder evenings.

But there is a catch.

If the curtain hangs directly over a radiator below the window, much of the warm air may end up trapped between the curtain and the glass.

You have created an extremely efficient system for heating the window.

Look at the arrangement.

Could the curtain sit behind the radiator?

Could it finish above it?

Could furniture be moved?

Again, small things matter.


15. Check Doors Between Warm and Cold Areas

A door between the kitchen and an unheated utility room can make a difference.

So can the door into an integral garage.

Or the door at the bottom of a stairway leading towards a colder part of the house.

Make sure they close properly.

Check seals.

You may discover that keeping one internal door closed makes an unexpectedly large difference to the comfort of nearby rooms.

This is not about living permanently behind closed doors.

It is about understanding how heat moves around the building.


16. Don't Automatically Heat Every Room Equally

We often heat houses as though every square metre has equal importance.

It rarely does.

Perhaps the spare room is used twice a month.

Perhaps there is a dining room nobody enters between Sunday lunch and Christmas.

Perhaps one bedroom is empty during the daytime.

Zoning can help.

That may mean sophisticated smart controls.

But it can also mean something as simple as using thermostatic radiator valves sensibly and closing doors.

There is no environmental prize for keeping an unused spare bedroom warmer than the people sitting in the living room.


17. Start With the Free Improvements

There is an entire industry ready to sell us energy-saving equipment.

Some of it is excellent.

Solar panels can be excellent.

Heat pumps can be excellent.

Better insulation can be excellent.

Modern glazing can be excellent.

Smart controls can be excellent.

But before spending thousands of pounds, I would start with the free questions.

Is the heating programmed sensibly?

Are radiators obstructed?

Are valves working?

Are windows closing correctly?

Are curtains helping rather than hindering?

Are we heating unused rooms?

Is insulation lying where it is supposed to be?

Are obvious draughts being ignored?

It would be rather frustrating to spend thousands replacing the heating system while continuing to heat the garden through a badly fitting door.


The One-Hour Autumn Energy MOT

If you only have an hour this weekend, try this.

First 15 minutes — Heating

Turn the system on.

Check radiators, thermostats and controls.

Listen for unusual noises.

Make sure valves operate.

Next 15 minutes — Draughts

Walk around external doors and windows.

Check the loft hatch.

Look for obvious gaps.

Next 15 minutes — Insulation and heat loss

Inspect the loft if it is safe to do so.

Identify your coldest rooms.

Look behind furniture and curtains.

Final 15 minutes — Controls

Review heating times.

Check thermostat settings.

Review hot-water programming.

Write down anything that needs attention.

You do not have to fix everything immediately.

The important thing is knowing where the problems are.


Create Your Own Winter Energy Baseline

There is one final experiment worth doing.

Take a meter reading, or record the information from your smart meter or energy monitoring system.

Write down:

  • outside temperature;

  • indoor temperature;

  • heating settings;

  • energy consumption.

Then repeat it occasionally during the colder months.

Do not become obsessed with individual daily readings because weather conditions vary enormously.

Instead, begin learning how your house behaves.

You may discover that reducing draughts has helped.

You may find that one control change made little difference.

You may discover that a colder week explains an apparent increase in consumption.

Most importantly, you begin treating your home almost like a system that can be understood rather than a mysterious box into which increasingly expensive energy disappears.


Going Green Works Best When It Saves Something

I have always felt that the most persuasive environmental changes are the ones that make life better at the same time.

A warmer room using less energy is better.

A lower electricity or heating bill is better.

A home without irritating draughts is better.

A heating system that works properly is better.

You do not have to make your home uncomfortable to make it greener.

Quite often, efficiency means achieving more comfort from less energy.

And that is why autumn is such a useful moment.

We have a short window between summer and the serious heating season in which we can investigate, adjust and repair.

So before automatically turning the thermostat up this autumn, spend an hour looking at the house first.

Check the radiators.

Find the draughts.

Look at the insulation.

Understand the thermostat.

Review the hot water.

Identify the cold rooms.

Because once winter arrives, every unnecessary unit of heat loss becomes something we have to pay to replace.

The cheapest unit of winter energy is still the one your house never needed in the first place.
