Could You Feed Your Household for Two Weeks If the Power Went Off Tonight?

“Open your cupboards tonight. How long could you actually eat if the shops and electricity stopped working?”

Most of us do not think of our homes as particularly vulnerable.

There is food in the fridge. There is water from the tap. The cooker works. The kettle works. We can order groceries online, drive to a supermarket, pay electronically and look up almost anything we need on a phone.

But all those conveniences depend upon systems working around us.

A serious storm, flooding, local infrastructure failure or prolonged power cut does not have to become a disaster before it becomes extremely inconvenient. Electricity may disappear. Internet access may fail. Mobile networks may become intermittent. A gas boiler may still need electricity to operate. Shops may struggle to process card payments, refrigeration may stop, and in some circumstances the water supply can also be disrupted.

The UK Government's current Prepare guidance specifically points out that prolonged power cuts can affect heating, internet and potentially water supplies, and recommends keeping non-perishable food, bottled water and a manual tin opener available.

This is not an argument for turning the spare bedroom into a bunker.

It is an argument for looking inside the kitchen cupboard and asking a surprisingly useful question:

Could we look after ourselves for a while if normal services suddenly stopped?


Preparedness Should Be Boring

Good household resilience should actually look rather ordinary.

Oats.

Tinned beans.

Tinned tomatoes.

Fish.

Crackers.

Long-life milk.

Nuts.

Dried fruit.

A few bottles of water.

A manual tin opener.

None of it makes a particularly exciting television programme.

And that is precisely the point.

The most sensible emergency food store is not a collection of expensive freeze-dried survival meals that sit untouched for 20 years. It is largely made up of ordinary food that you already eat.

Buy it.

Store it.

Use it.

Replace it.

That approach costs relatively little, creates less waste and means that if you ever do need it, you are eating familiar food rather than discovering during a power cut that nobody in the family likes the emergency rations.

There is a useful environmental principle here too:

Resilience and sustainability often point in the same direction.

Keeping useful staples, reducing waste, knowing how to cook from basic ingredients, using what you already have and rotating supplies all make sense whether or not an emergency ever happens.


How Prepared Are British Households?

The answer appears to be: much better for food than for water.

A 2026 UK Government survey found that 85% of respondents reported having at least three days of non-perishable food, while 25% said they had seven days or more.

Water was a very different story. Based on an allowance of three litres per person per day, only 4% had enough bottled water for three or more days.

That illustrates one of the biggest misconceptions about household preparedness.

Food is not necessarily the difficult bit. Water is.

Many of us probably already have several days of calories somewhere in the house.

We may have pasta, rice, cereal, tins, frozen food, biscuits and other supplies.

But turn off the kitchen tap and the situation changes remarkably quickly.


Start With Water, Not Food

Current UK Prepare guidance notes that there is no single correct amount of emergency water because circumstances differ. However, it cites a minimum of approximately 2.5 to 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, while around 10 litres per person per day provides considerably more comfort because it allows for basic cooking and hygiene as well. Babies, pets and some medical needs require additional water.

That immediately produces some sobering numbers.

For one person for 14 days, three litres a day means:

42 litres

For two people:

84 litres

For a family of four:

168 litres

And that is essentially drinking water, not comfortable everyday domestic use.

At ten litres per person per day, a family of four would require 560 litres over two weeks.

Suddenly the water becomes more difficult to store than the baked beans.

That does not mean everyone needs to find space for hundreds of litres tomorrow. Household resilience does not have to be all or nothing.

A much more sensible progression might be:

three days → one week → two weeks

Even having three days of drinking water is substantially better than having none.

Government advice recommends commercially bottled water for longer-term emergency storage rather than filling ordinary containers from the tap and forgetting about them.


And What About the Water Butt?

I am a great advocate of collecting rainwater.

It is excellent for watering the garden and reduces the demand for treated mains water.

During a water interruption it could potentially also become extremely valuable for tasks such as flushing toilets.

But there is an important distinction:

water from an ordinary garden water butt should not be treated as drinking water.

UK guidance specifically warns that collected rainwater may contain harmful microorganisms and recommends using it for purposes such as gardening or toilet flushing rather than drinking.

Having different grades of stored water therefore makes sense.

Clean bottled water is precious.

Do not use it to flush a toilet if you have a perfectly good supply of non-potable rainwater outside.


The Two-Week Cupboard

If I were building a sensible household resilience cupboard, I would not begin by buying 14 identical emergency meals.

I would build it around food groups and flexibility.

Carbohydrates and filling foods

Oats are excellent because they are cheap, nutritious and easy to store.

Breakfast cereal can be eaten with small cartons of UHT milk.

Crackers, crispbreads and oatcakes need no cooking at all.

Tinned potatoes are considerably more useful during a complete power failure than a cupboard containing ten kilograms of dried pasta if there is no way of boiling water.

Rice, pasta and couscous are still worth storing, but remember that their usefulness depends upon having both water and a safe source of heat.

That is an important rule:

Do not measure resilience simply by how much food is in the cupboard. Ask what is required to turn that food into a meal.


Protein Matters Too

It would be perfectly possible to survive for some time eating biscuits and cereal.

That does not make it a good plan.

Useful long-life protein sources include:

  • tinned beans, chickpeas and lentils;
  • tinned fish;
  • tinned meat;
  • peanut or other nut butters;
  • nuts and seeds;
  • UHT milk;
  • some shelf-stable prepared meals.

Many pulses can be eaten directly from the tin because they have already been cooked.

That distinction matters. A bag of dried kidney beans might last for years, but it needs soaking, water and substantial cooking. A tin of kidney beans can be opened and eaten immediately.

For normal life, the dried beans may be cheaper and environmentally attractive.

For an emergency store, it is sensible to have both.


Fruit and Vegetables Have Not Suddenly Become Optional

Emergency food cupboards sometimes seem to consist almost entirely of carbohydrates and tins of meat.

There is no reason for that.

Tinned tomatoes, peas, carrots, sweetcorn, beans and mixed vegetables store well.

Tinned fruit can be extremely useful, particularly fruit packed in juice.

Dried apricots, raisins and other dried fruit are compact sources of energy and nutrients.

Some whole fresh foods also keep surprisingly well under suitable conditions.

Apples, for example, may last considerably longer than soft berries.

Carrots, onions and potatoes can also be useful, although their storage conditions matter.

Your emergency cupboard should therefore resemble a simplified version of a normal diet rather than a collection of survival snacks.


Don't Forget Calories

There is another easy mistake.

A cupboard can look impressively full while containing remarkably little energy.

Tins of tomatoes and vegetables are useful, but someone living on them alone will rapidly become hungry.

Foods such as nuts, peanut butter, oats and oil provide concentrated energy without occupying much space.

Chocolate and biscuits need not be excluded either.

Preparedness does not require nutritional perfection.

A familiar snack, cup of tea or piece of chocolate can be surprisingly important for morale when normal routines have disappeared.


Meals That Don't Need a Cooker

This is where the exercise becomes much more interesting.

Imagine the electricity has just gone off.

Not for 20 minutes.

Not until teatime.

For an unknown period.

What could you actually eat?

A few examples might be:

Breakfast: oats soaked in a small carton of UHT milk with raisins and nuts.

Lunch: tinned tuna, sweetcorn and beans with crackers.

Dinner: mixed beans, tinned vegetables and ready-to-eat meat or fish, followed by tinned fruit.

Another meal might be chickpeas with tinned tomatoes, sweetcorn and crackers.

Or peanut butter on crispbread with dried fruit.

None of these are gourmet meals.

But that misses the point.

They are foods that can become meals without mains electricity, refrigeration or significant quantities of cooking water.

A useful household challenge would therefore be:

Try one no-power day.

Do not actually switch your electricity off.

Simply spend one day pretending that you cannot use your oven, hob, microwave, toaster or kettle.

You will very quickly discover the weaknesses in your emergency cupboard.


The Problem With Pasta

Pasta is one of my favourite examples because it demonstrates the difference between food storage and system resilience.

A family might proudly have ten packets of pasta in the cupboard.

Excellent.

Now remove the electricity.

Perhaps the induction hob no longer works.

The kettle does not work.

The gas boiler may not work because its controls and pumps require electricity.

Now remove the water supply as well.

Those ten packets of pasta have suddenly become considerably less useful.

This does not mean we should not store pasta.

It means an emergency cupboard should contain a proportion of food that can be eaten without heating at all.


"But I Have a Gas Cooker"

That may help, but I would still avoid building the entire plan around it.

Modern homes are interconnected.

Government power-cut guidance points out that some gas appliances and boilers will not work normally without electricity.

Even if your particular hob can be lit manually, you need to know that beforehand rather than discovering it during an outage.

The same principle applies to solar panels and batteries.

In my own home, moving towards an all-electric system with solar and battery storage makes me very conscious of this distinction. Generating or storing electricity is one thing; being able to use it safely during a grid failure depends upon how the electrical system is configured.

The question is therefore not:

"Have I got solar panels?"

It is:

"What circuits will actually continue working when the grid disappears?"

That is something worth finding out before you need the answer.


What About a Camping Stove?

A small camping stove can transform emergency cooking.

It can boil water.

It can heat soup.

It can make pasta, rice or porridge useful again.

But there is a crucial safety rule.

Never use barbecues or camping stoves indoors.

The UK Chief Medical Officers' power-outage guidance specifically warns that camping stoves, barbecues and similar equipment used indoors create a serious carbon monoxide risk.

Not in the kitchen.

Not because a window is open.

Not in the garage.

Use appropriate outdoor cooking equipment outside, following its instructions.

This is another reason why storing some food requiring no cooking whatsoever is so valuable.


Day One Is Different From Day Ten

If the electricity failed tonight, I would not immediately open the emergency tins.

I would begin with the refrigerator.

Then the freezer.

Only later would I move onto the long-life cupboard.

That minimises waste.

Current Food Standards Agency guidance says an unopened fridge should remain cold for roughly four hours. A full freezer can remain frozen for up to around 48 hours, while a half-full freezer may manage about 24 hours, although actual temperatures vary. Keeping the doors closed is critical.

So the sensible order is broadly:

fresh food → refrigerated food → frozen food as necessary → short-life ambient food → long-life emergency supplies

Do not repeatedly open the freezer to see whether it is still cold.

Every inspection lets more cold air escape.

A cheap fridge/freezer thermometer can also provide more useful information than guesswork.


The Manual Tin Opener Test

Imagine having 30 tins of perfectly good food and an electric tin opener.

It sounds ridiculous.

Yet resilience failures are often like this.

They are not dramatic.

They are tiny missing links.

A manual tin opener should probably sit alongside any emergency tins.

And actually try it.

Some beautifully designed kitchen gadgets turn out to be remarkably difficult to use when confronted with a stubborn tin of beans.


Build Meals, Not Just a Stockpile

One of the best ways to test a food store is to spread everything out and ask:

How many actual meals are here?

Twenty tins of tomatoes are not twenty dinners.

Neither are six jars of peanut butter.

Think in combinations.

For example:

Meal 1: tuna + sweetcorn + crackers + fruit.

Meal 2: chickpeas + tomatoes + oatcakes + dried fruit.

Meal 3: beans + tinned potatoes + carrots.

Meal 4: UHT milk + cereal + nuts + dried fruit.

Meal 5: tinned meat + mixed vegetables + crackers.

Then vary the combinations.

A two-week supply does not mean creating a rigid 42-meal menu.

It means having enough compatible ingredients that breakfast, lunch and dinner remain reasonably varied.


Buy What You Normally Eat

This is probably the most important anti-waste principle in the whole article.

Do not create an "emergency food cupboard" containing things nobody normally wants.

Instead, create a deeper version of your normal cupboard.

If you regularly use chickpeas, keep four tins rather than one.

When you use the oldest tin, put a new one at the back.

Do the same with:

UHT milk.

Tomatoes.

Fish.

Beans.

Oats.

Crackers.

Nuts.

Fruit.

The emergency reserve then constantly rotates.

Nothing needs to be thrown away simply because it has sat forgotten for years.

Resilience should be a system, not a shopping spree.


Medication Is More Important Than Baked Beans

For some households, the most important item in the cupboard is not food at all.

It is medication.

Current UK preparedness guidance recommends ensuring you have enough essential medication for several days and keeping written details of important medicines and instructions. People dependent on powered medical equipment should have a specific plan for power disruption and, where appropriate, backup batteries.

That does not mean accumulating prescription medicines beyond what your doctor or pharmacist considers appropriate.

It means avoiding repeatedly reaching the final tablet before ordering the next prescription.

The NHS currently recommends allowing around five working days for a normal repeat prescription process and provides emergency prescription routes through NHS 111 and pharmacies if someone unexpectedly runs out.

People using medicines that require refrigeration should know in advance what to do during a prolonged power failure and obtain advice from their pharmacist or medical team rather than improvising.


If the Water Stops, Hygiene Becomes Part of the Food Plan

Losing drinking water is only one problem.

How do you wash your hands?

How do you clean a work surface?

How do you wash dishes?

How do you flush a toilet?

This is where a few extremely ordinary items suddenly become useful:

hand sanitiser, wet wipes, kitchen roll, rubbish bags, disposable cloths and some non-drinking water.

UK emergency guidance specifically suggests keeping hand sanitiser and wet wipes available in case the mains water supply fails.

Again, none of this is dramatic.

It is simply removing small problems before they become large ones.


Don't Forget the People Who Aren't Eating From Your Cupboard

A two-week plan needs to include everyone in the household.

That might include:

babies,

elderly family members,

people with specific dietary requirements,

and pets.

Baby formula creates a particularly important water and hygiene issue. Government guidance notes that ready-to-feed formula can be especially useful where safe boiling and sterilisation cannot be guaranteed.

And the Labrador will not be particularly impressed that you carefully calculated 14 days of human food while forgetting the dog biscuits.


What Else Belongs Beside the Food?

Food and water are only part of resilience.

Alongside them I would want:

  • a manual tin opener;
  • battery or wind-up torches, preferably rather than relying on candles;
  • a battery or wind-up radio;
  • spare batteries;
  • charged power banks;
  • a first-aid kit;
  • essential medication;
  • hand sanitiser and wet wipes;
  • rubbish bags;
  • toilet roll and basic hygiene supplies;
  • some cash;
  • important telephone numbers written on paper;
  • pet or baby supplies where needed.

The Government's Prepare campaign recommends many of these items and also advises writing down the number 105 for reporting or obtaining information about power cuts in England, Scotland and Wales.

There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about writing a telephone number on paper.

Until your phone has a flat battery.


Don't Try to Buy Two Weeks of Everything Tomorrow

This is where sensible preparedness becomes very different from panic buying.

If everyone suddenly rushed to the supermarket and bought 14 days of food and water, they would help create precisely the shortages they were worried about.

There is no need.

Add resilience gradually.

One week, buy two extra tins of something you normally use.

Next week, another bottle or pack.

Build a few days of supplies.

Then a week.

Then consider whether extending particular items towards two weeks makes sense for your household.

Rotate everything normally.

Within a surprisingly short time, you can create a useful buffer without a huge bill or a cupboard full of unwanted food.


The Two-Week Test

Here is an interesting exercise for this weekend.

Open every food cupboard.

Look in the fridge and freezer.

Now imagine three things have happened simultaneously:

The electricity is off.

The tap doesn't work.

The supermarket is closed.

Ask yourself:

What would we eat tonight?

Then:

What would we eat tomorrow?

And eventually:

What would we eat on Day 10?

Which meals require water?

Which require refrigeration?

Which require a microwave?

Which require an oven?

Can you open all the tins?

How much drinking water do you really have?

Could you make a hot drink?

What would the pets eat?

Do you have enough essential medication?

Those questions will reveal far more about your household resilience than buying a pre-packed "72-hour survival kit".


Resilience Is Not About Expecting Disaster

The UK has resilient infrastructure, and most power cuts are relatively short. Government guidance nevertheless recognises that more widespread and longer disruptions are possible.

Preparedness is therefore not about believing that catastrophe is around the corner.

It is more like having a spare tyre in the car.

You hope not to need it.

You do not spend every journey worrying about punctures.

You simply recognise that a modest amount of preparation can turn a serious inconvenience into a manageable problem.

And there are other benefits.

A well-managed cupboard helps when someone is ill.

It helps when snow makes travel difficult.

It helps when you return late and have not been shopping.

It can reduce expensive last-minute purchases.

It encourages better stock rotation.

And it makes us think more carefully about how dependent our homes have become upon continuous supplies of electricity, water, communications and transport.


Conclusion: Open the Cupboard Tonight

So tonight, do something very simple.

Open the cupboard.

Do not buy anything yet.

Just look.

Imagine the electricity has disappeared.

Imagine the tap has stopped.

Imagine you cannot simply drive to the supermarket.

Then count the meals rather than the tins.

Count the litres of water rather than the bottles.

Find the manual tin opener.

Think about medication.

Think about the pets.

Think about what you can eat without cooking.

You may discover that you could manage surprisingly well.

Or you may discover that your entire emergency food plan consists of dried pasta, frozen chicken and an electric tin opener.

Either way, you will know something today that you did not know yesterday.

And that is where sensible household resilience begins.
